Continental shelf in China Seas, such as the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, is one of widest continental shelves with highest production in the world. Strong human activities such as dam construction, fertilization practice and industrial development influence the Chinese coastal sea through rivers and cause serious environmental and ecological problems, for example, eutrophication, red tides, diversity decrease, coast erosion, salt water intrusion, and etc. Some important issues related the JGOFS and LOICZ researches will be systematically studied:
Carbon cycle in the Chinese adjacent seas, including quantitative evaluation of air-sea CO2 flux, related process studies and modeling
Variability of material flux from Chinese main rivers, its response to human activities and influence on coastal environment and ecosystem
Environment evolutions of Chinese important fishery field and their relationship with terrestrial human activities
Characteristics and variability of salt water intrusion in Chinese important coastal areas |
